Music Inspiration: Art with Patrick Wolf and a cellist

In the past I've posted about artwork that was inspired by words and poetry (remember "Words! Mere words!"?), so in this post I'm focusing on things that were inspired by music.

The first one is a charcoal drawing of Patrick Wolf:

Charcoal isn't really my favourite medium to work with. I find that, like watercolours, it's really stressful because you can't always undo what you've done. I think for someone as OCD as me, pencils and acrylics are a lot more comforting because they provide more leeway in terms of erasability.

Anyway I am actually pretty happy with how this one turned out. I think I'd only been using charcoal for a couple of months when I made it. I used a photo that I took of Patrick Wolf at the Mod Club in 2009 as my guide:

It's not a very good photo but I really liked the composition of Patrick's hands on the violin. String instruments are beautiful on their own, but I find I'm really fascinated with looking at musician's hands when they play. So my next piece is a silhouette of a girl playing a cello:

After I sketched the outline of the girl I pasted on sheet music in the surrounding areas. This was layered with washes of acrylic paint before I filled in the silhouette. It's hard to see from the photo, but the silhouette isn't completely flat - I layered dark red to black to give some shape to it, especially around the girl's hands, which were my focus.

Anyway, that's it for today. Hopefully I'll have something new to post soon!
