ModCloth, je t'aime: Making my own version of a ModCloth gem

First off, some important news of the day: I have a new magpie mascot! I really am quite proud of him. I haven't done any computer designing since the days of CommTech in high school, so I'm happy to see I can still do a few things with vector graphics. What do you think? Does he look shifty enough?

I've been trolling the internet for inspiration lately, and I have to say that ModCloth is an endless resource. It's lucky for my bank account that I'm much too wary of buying clothes online (and of paying international shipping fees) to actually order anything. The clothes are amazing, however. I feel like I could pretend I were Zooey Deschanel every day if my closet were filled with their dresses. I'm currently in love with the Fleece CumpleaƱos Dress, and when I've finished my version of it, I hope I can have a least a few Zooey-themed daydream moments.

I can't believe I've never even thought of sewing with sweater fabric, but it's absolutely perfect for the upcoming Canadian winter. So the other day I went to the fashion district and picked up some royal-blue knit sweater fabric and the rest of the supplies to recreate this dress. The design is actually very simple and not too different from some of my other dresses. I'm going to have to do a bit of pattern drafting however, because the only princesss-seamed pattern I have opens at the front rather than the back. I also plan on adding 3/4-length sleeves.

My supplies! The lace is different but it was also very cheap.

ModCloth dress: $84.99 US + shipping. My version: $26.19 CAN.

Stay tuned: Hopefully I'll be able to make the dress this Thanksgiving long weekend. Gobble gobble!
